Inhalt
This course offers an examination of the European integration process through the analytical lens of political economy. It introduces students to the key theoretical frameworks, mechanisms, and institutional dynamics that shape interactions between political and economic determinants and actors at supranational, national, and sub-national levels. Emphasis is placed on understanding how these multilevel factors jointly determine the trajectories, forms, and constraints of European integration. Special attention is devoted to the phenomenon of differentiated integration, its historical evolution, its contemporary manifestations, and its implications for European governance.By combining conceptual inquiry with comparative analysis across member states and sectors, the course equips students to identify and explain cross-country variations in the drivers and outcomes of integration. Students develop the ability to critically evaluate the social, economic, political, and legal determinants underpinning integration processes and to assess their broader relevance for European unity. Ultimately, the course enhances traditional curricula by embedding recent developments within a political-economy framework and by providing the analytical tools and competencies necessary for conducting independent research on the political and economic dimensions of European integration and its differentiated forms. The language of instruction is English.
